How do artists look for magazines?

I know several sites where, as a writer, or a poet--I can go and search for magazines that might fit what I'm looking for. Duotrope, Ralan's, Storypilot, Spicy Green Iguana... or even the Rumor Mill.

And at those places, it may or may not mention whether the magazine accepts art, as sort of an afterthought.

Are there similar places more targeted for artists? If you're an artist, how have you gotten your foot in the door, with magazines? Or what have you tried?

Most of the artists in GUD, to date, are people we contacted directly after seeing some of their work online.

Thanks. :)

How is the magazine going, btw? I'd never noticed it until you did an lj comment in my blah-og, but now I've encountered the ads a few times :-)

It goes, it goes. It could definitely be doing better, but I'm new to the whole publicity thing--and it's gratifying to hear that you've encountered the ads a few times. We've got a fullpage coming out in Apex Digest next issue that I'm fairly excited about; and meanwhile, our second issue is currently being polished (and I'm just waiting for our latest round of investment checks to clear so we can pay all of our contributors for that issue).

The content we're picking is amazing, and it's great to see the second issue shaping up. I'm told I need to be more patient with sales--that these things take time, especially with small press, especially with fiction/poetry magazines.

I'm always brainstorming how to get a larger brainshare, though.

We're leaning towards starting up a web-only review column to keep things more active on that front, and to get more people talking about us.

And... yes, a whole pile of projects that we're hopeful about. :)

You sound upbeat, which is cool. The ads've got to help, and probably have a delayed reaction to the sales.

I'll check out the .pdf in the next day or so.

Upbeat comes and goes, but it is definitely nice to be. :) We got bumped from Apex 9 due to timing/spacing, but Apex 10 may even be better timing for us. Need to get a couple more ads together. And a contest of sorts, with the site, should be coming soon, too. :)
