It would have its own dbtables, wouldn't handle user registration/editing, would have special-purpose functions to help nest threaded conversations and the like, maybe even do BB code and offer smiley completion and stuff like that... wouldn't have its own pages but could have "stubs" ready and waiting.

If it doesn't exist (and I don't see how it couldn't), I may just write something. It would be nice to have _something_ reusable, eh?

Something simple. Something happy. Something that integrates with existing sites (and databases) to the point where you don't realize it's an integration. I'm talking _seamless_. Eh?

because i'm a cheap prick who is lazy and whatnot...

http://www.phpbb.com is fairly simple.

Then agian, this may be to much of a big chunk.
I'm definatly sure there is something really more smaller around here somewhere.

ooo. In Beginning: PHP5, Apache, MySQL, Web Development [A book by that WROX company..] - it has a simple tutorial on making your own forum with little no 'great' features and keeps it really simple with bbcode and I'm sure everything your looking for.

phpbb is a monster. It's simple to set up and simple to use, but death to anyone that wants to actually integrate it with something, as I understand it. I'd spend more time chopping it apart and trying to make it use my user table and such than it would take to make some medium-sized bulletin board system.

But if I was going to use some pre-built library, I would want it to be roughly on that _caliber_ of functionality, or again I'm back to "I should just write it myself".

Things I've been very happy with, in terms of libraries -- ADODB, Cache::Lite, NuSOAP, some email class I found... that SWF XML PHP graphing thing...

I've a friend who has been attempting it. He is filled with woe.
Dec. 19th, 2005 06:26 pm (UTC)
What steps did he take to do such?

Sounds like http://www.phpbbstyles.com/viewtopic.php?t=356 (extreme styles mod) may be a step in the right direction, in terms of dropping it into an existing framework. leaving the big question of 'users'.

You'd think this would be a FAQ, really.

maybe with some info from -- http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=285945

maybe I'm better off attacking this as a phpbb mod than my own thing entirely?

And maybe when I try installing phpBB, I'll see what I want as an option and feel stupid. Who knows?

Yes, the woe is mighty and thick, and very filling, though it must rage against the frustration I've built as well.

Three hours, and I started to see how very bad it was, what I was trying.

Had the template integrated beautifully.

Accounts were a different matter entirely.

I think it would have been faster to rebuild my own code to use the phpbb user tables than to hack at phpbb to use my user table.

Fucking hell!

He ended up going the same route, trying to use the phpBB userdb with fresh code, after discovering what a mess the stuff that was there was. I don't think he ever entirely succeeded, but he put a good try into it...

Not the cleanest thing in the world, but I got it working in 2 hours from scratch -- http://subtitled-japan.com/forums/

phpbb is an insane monster. I blew four or five hours trying to integrate with it. If I'd started from scratch and built my site around _it_ -- but that's silly.

looks nice :)

Thanks =)

Spent another two hours after basic integration playing with a stylesheet. Pretty simple. :)

Would it be more trouble than it's worth for you to explain what the heck you are talking about? It's all computer-ese to me.

Re: ...PHP?
php is the web programming language I've been using for the last year or so.

the rest... eh. suffice to say I want something that I don't think exists--the engine of a car, separate from the car itself.

I think that dungeoneer has been experimenting along that line. You might ask him.
