S long as you're using PS (I assume you are), do the drawing in gray and then colorize. If it looks good in grayscale, the color will always look good.

I'll give that a shot; that's how I tend to work when my scanner's working (regular pencil, scan, tweak, color). It's not, now, and I've been getting sloppy.
