A hint of things to come...

I made minor progress with tetris tonight. But it feels like so much more! I think I've gotten (:heh: suuuuure...) the hang of rotating coordinates. Yes, be afraid. No, I'm sure I don't really have the hang of it. But enough for now.

For a hint of things to come, try... http://erif.org/temp/FallingUp000.exe

Let me know if it doesn't work on your computer. I need to learn these things (like maybe it needs to be bundled with a library or two)

Mind you, this version is highly 'accelerated. And the background is not meant to be so obnoxious. And there will eventually be sounds. And a top ten list. And other things of polish. And whatnot.

Works on 98SE. Could use a couple tweaks, but those'll come in time :)

Yay that it works. I'm open to ideas, though I have a bunch still in progress, so ... yes. I'm curious to what sorts of tweaks you'd like. :)

- Spherical deformations
- Insight into where the bricks come from. Pieces breaking off from a pit from a previous game? Nethack-esque bonesfiles?
- Something distracting for when the gameplane is edge-on to us. Perhaps a kind of flare or faux-3d so it doesn't get too 'papery'
- Some sort of background, but I imagine that's already on the todo :)

http://www.electricsheep.org is inspiring... Watching the evolution of the sheep...

Electric sheep is very nifty. :)

what the hell kind of tetris shape is that? :) [[looks like a space invader, ish]]

as for the papery, I rather like it. Though I've been bounding the idea of the blocks as dimensional. Also bouncing the idea of making the blocks render to texture, which I could then deform with curves and whatnot. But I think.... I think I want to cut this project "done" asap, and get the code (and presentation) critiqued, then move on. so presentation is going to include better lettering (maybe), top 10, 'game over' screen, and a better background (maybe with demo effects like fire and whatnot). Oh, and I really need to figure out the 'speed' aspect of it better. I think the game curves too hard as it gets higher.

But. Yeah. Must. Work.

so did it compile easily on some other platform, or did you use the windows or os x version?

Every now and then, if the pit has enough space, a piece that makes no sense whatsoever might be neat.

It could become the ultimate surreal tetris at some point :)

"doh!" Application error:

"The instruction at "0x050c4d62" referenced memory at "0x0cb25020". The memory could not be "written". "

Work computer: IBM Thinkpad P3 800, Windows 2000 pro

It had just about made a tall rectangular window on the left side of the screen - I could see the outline.

That sucks. :/ It shouldn't do that regardless.

Good to know, though.

Makes ya wonder.

It's not because your machine's too slow (mine's a 600MHz Duron). Though I do have a middling-spiff video card. So maybe. But shouldn't be. (thinking maybe I do some program initialization too late... or something...)

Okay, works (an acid trip) on a dual xeon 3.06 with a gig of ram (muhahahwhah) - win2k pro.

exccccelent =)
Jan. 12th, 2004 04:37 pm (UTC)
And it works on my home machine P3 733 winxp pro

very cool game - suggestion, show score after death.

once things go bad - they go bad very quickly! nice job.

There will be a "game over" screen, along with score, and possibility to enter name for top 10. haven't decided how to store top10 stuff.

there will also be sound effects and maybe "music" (all optional)

there will also be trippier background effects. I hope.

And I need to slow down how quickly things go bad. _some_. :) I want a game that can be played endlessly, and people'll put it down when it scales too quickly.

and then... then I have a _real_ game planned. which will be step two in my ten or eleven game series, at the moment.

Re: Vampire
Er... good luck with that. I don't hold any game I've run in very high regard.
