What we have here... is a failure to participate. I toyed with the idea, and convinced myself (deluded myself) that there was a slight sliver of possibility that I would take up pen, and write.
Such was not really the case. I have eight books bought (used) to help me better understand feudal england, where my novel is somewhat generically set. I have major changes in mind to the landscape, but I was lost in the woods--reading about how things were is giving me many ideas for what I can do.
If I have a plot I can believe in at the end of this month, I'll count it a personal win.
That said, I _am_ planning on doing a challenge of another sort next month (and the two months following that). A game. :) This is separate from my attempts at flash games (I'm kind of disappointed with where the most recent attempt is going, to the point of (possibly?) coining a new term: programmer's remorse; still waiting for that to show up on urban dictionary. They don't tend to like my coins?).
I have lots of ideas for "my next game". But I've been doing a pretty horrid job of hitting that "fun" quotient. So ... I'm open to suggestions. What should my next game be? :) And would you want to participate in either a code, art, or music capacity? :)

Three hours into implementing a nifty idea, I (of course) came across an even simpler method. Upside: I learned auto-complete is pretty damned easy in .NET 3.0. Downside? Some wasted time, and I installed Visual C++ Express 2008 (see: wasted time).
Anyway, the short of it is: I wanted to be able to start->run the programs I've got in my quick launch toolbar. I was going to steal windows-r and make my own start run that added the quick launch to the search path, basically (and when I put it like that, well, that's exactly (and _all_) you have to do!). Well, you don't get the supercool autocomplete, but:
Add your quicklaunch bar directory to your PATH. Done. ((It's something like C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch)) <-- I was looking for how to find that directory programatically. ((that's where it will be pre-vista, anyway; vista I don't have a box just this moment to look at, but it won't be under "documents and settings")).
Where I saw the "easy" solution, and more ideas here.
Even cooler is apparently you _can_ turn on autocomplete with the "run" bar, as per turn autocompletion on for the run command. You wouldn't think it had anything to do with anything, but if you go into IE, internet options, advanced: "Use inline AutoComplete for Web Addresses". BAM! Autocomplete in start->run (aka Win-R). caveat on this--it only works for things you've typed previously, it seems.

Yup, that's a full release version (well, a bugfix release after a full release). Long night last night that would more responsibly have been spent on work or sleep (or both) and a bit of a delirious day today, as well. Some discussion over at
gamedevelopers.
Go see! Binary available for windows, source available for other platforms if you're so inclined. I intend to do a linux binary and an OSX dmg when I "get the chance". Maybe after I don't feel too many more bugfixes/whatnots are going to work their way back into a release too soon, because it's a lot of work to do a build.

And apparently I don't have an ljicon for programming... strange. Maybe I consider that my default? I do have some for specific programming projects, but... eh. Right, then.
HandBrewed ... "says" - mouseover the logo to start playing. No instructions, really, but you're expected to recognize the game. That seems to be in style with simple flash games, anyway. :)

Writersplanner now has a 'quickfind' searchbox that is AJAX enabled. Whee! Of course, it works like a normal thing if javascript is not enabled, and none (or almost none) of the javascript is on the page (I should move the last bit off... it's at the bottom of the page, and really doesn't need to be, I believe) It has it when you're logged in, at least. No point in confusing folks with a search bar when they're just figuring out what the system is.
Noticed that the Firefox Firebug debugging console extension thingy has a 'ShowHttpXmlRequests' option. So freaking awesome!

I found an awesome image resizer for windows, freeware. I'd write it with a different interface, but... still... finally.... http://www.realfiletools.com/free/p hoto-resize.htm
I'd rather it were drag and drop so I didn't have to hunt through paths... but hey. :)

I have now enabled anonymous subversion access to detritus and falling up. WHOOHOOO!
Everything you should need to compile is described at http://erif.org/code/
Just got things together "from scratch" on my laptop, in case the coding bug hits me on this upcoming trip.
La?

UFO -- for Detritus, perhaps?
Would definitely be a step up. :)
